PODCAST
POWER
In May last year, our very
own Academy Award-winning
OD Craig Foster (1985F) was
interviewed on episode #735
of The Tim Ferriss Show, one of
the most popular business and
entrepreneurship podcasts in the
world. Just two months before the
broadcast, Ferriss’s show passed
the one-billion downloads mark.
Ferris and Craig are fans of each
other’s work, and the result was
a memorable two-hour podcast.
Craig was publicising his new
book, Amphibious Soul, which
has received endorsements from
Jane Goodall, James Cameron
and Yo-Yo Ma, among others,
and been reviewed in The Wall
Street Journal, The Guardian and
The New York Times, and on NPR.
To publicise the book, Craig’s
PR tour took him from Florida,
Arizona and California to London
and ultimately the Hay Festival
in Wales. See p72.

that will transform how
we think about being
human… that will inspire
hope.” – Jane Goodall
22 | THE OLD DIOCESAN
Luke Mostert (2014K), the co-founder and chief strategy officer of
CatalyzU, was recently recognised in Forbes Africa’s “30 Under 30” list
for 2024. With a background in educational technology and venture
capital investment, Luke has a real understanding of the challenges
facing African youth as they enter the job market. CatalyzU is a platform
conceived to make “career and entrepreneurial knowledge accessible to
all, regardless of economic background”, according to a Business Partners
profile. “Since its founding, CatalyzU has reached thousands of young
professionals through virtual workshops and tailored courses in digital
skills, career development and entrepreneurship.”

PARENTAL GUIDANCE
When not editing this magazine, Tim Richman (1995B) takes on other timeconsuming roles… Last year, that included being involved in the launch of the
Smartphone Free Childhood movement in South Africa, a parent-led initiative
that advocates for healthier use of social media and screen tech for children.
SFC went viral – not without irony – in the UK last February, and has quickly
spread around the world. Sensibly enough, Tim steered clear of the really
hard graft of signing up thousands of eager parents in SA – but he did write
about the global sea change in attitude that has been largely driven by the
work of US psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation.
The result was a Business Day article, “Rescuing our children from the clutches
of smartphones”, in October 2024. Those following the topic may be interested
to know that Bishops has taken heed of the (now irrefutable) science, and has
fully revised its cellphone policies at both the Prep and College.
