T
he first issue of The Old Diocesan
appeared in March 2018, the
brainchild of ODU chair Bruce
Jack (1987G). In the demise of the
little blue quarterly Bishops magazine,
Bruce saw an opportunity to produce
a publication that shone a light on ODs
doing great things and so, hopefully,
keep our extended network more
connected and engaged with the
school. (Bruce is on p66, by the way.)
In the 10 issues since, in which
time the magazine has moved from
bi-annual to annual publication, it
has been striking, for me, to see how
deeply various ODs have become
involved in its production, with
little or no financial incentive. Alan
Ramsay (1960F) has been a source
of enthusiasm and publishing wisdom
from day one. WP van Zyl (1997K) and
Anton Taylor (2005B) gave up countless
hours on early issues. Tudor CaradocDavies (1998B), Ian-Malcolm Rijsdijk
(1991B) and Brandon de Kock (1986K)
are regular (superb) contributors.
And, of course, ODU Ambassador
Paul Murray has contributed articles
(see p54) and dug up critical facts on
every issue. There are plenty of others.
Why do they do it? For the love of
their school, certainly – though that
love can be tested… More often, it
seems, because the OD network is
genuinely interesting, really inspiring.
In this issue, a younger OD stepped
up to the contributor’s plate. Mike
Wright (2014B) is one of those nodal
mavens who bumps into people and
then things happen. Read his snippet
about making a newspaper with Will
Linley (2019K) on p27 to see what
I mean. And then read his wonderful
feature on young ODs doing what he
does: stepping up (see p30). Genuinely
interesting, really inspiring…
