LIVING THE DREAM
“What makes a great photograph?
I think it’s when people are changed by it.”
A word from
the publisher
“I well recall David’s enthusiasm
as a photojournalist – and all
Getaway journalists needed
to be not just writers, but
also photographers. David
was excellent in both roles,
as evidenced in his subsequent
career. He and his fellow editors
produced content that drove
the magazine’s circulation to
more than 100,000 per issue,
substantial for a South African
special-interest magazine.”

Several phenomenal images
hang in David’s house, including
wildlife, landscape and
environmental shots. But his
professional speciality these

the place I wanted to go, so
I diversified with the kinds of
photographs I was taking. Then
lodge photography became quite
a big subject itself, and I already
had this knowledge about lodges
I’d been to. The next stage was to
go freelance again and write for
international publications.”
David has taken photographs for
&Beyond, Singita, Sabi Sabi, Royal
Portfolio and Banyan Tree lodges,
among many others, and his
work has appeared in the likes
of National Geographic, Condé Nast
Traveler and Country & Town House.

if she was going to look after
the kids, I’d better come back
with some money. That was true

send our kids to Bishops.” David’s
sons Liam and Dane are recent
ODs (see sidebar on page 48), and
Dane’s artwork appears on the
cover of this issue. He continues:
“I started leading wildlife
photography trips in the early
2000s, starting in South Luangwa,
Zambia and working alongside the
