The Gold Stays (We Measure Growth in Loss) by Oliver Marr (2013O).
Thomas’s part for that unique
experience of feeling connected to
a great many places, yet not truly
knowing where your roots lie.
From there, the resonance of
the significance of place in the
exhibition continued to make
itself obvious. Leon Glanvill’s (staff)
Day 2 was named for both the
second day of Biblical creationism
and the fact that it was painted on
the second day of Covid lockdown.
An abstract landscape rendered in
a swirl of blue and green, it called
to mind both a half-formed world
and the great outdoors we all
wistfully pined for during those
long months trapped inside.
I have, of course, grown up
seeing my father, past Bishops
art master Peter Hyslop, produce
some remarkable paintings, but
it was not until now that I truly

hundreds of individual images.
The first, Malay Quarters, taken in
the Bo-Kaap, displays a scene that
celebrates the history of the Cape

is a firmly established fixture
of Cape Town – and the two

this exhibition, is a regular
attendee at its monthly
meetings to discuss matters
of art, science and culture – as
is the ODU Ambassador, Paul
Murray. Both were in attendance
at Justin Fox’s presentation
mentioned in the article.
