or the past two decades, Scott
Ramsay (1993F) has traversed
much of sub-Saharan Africa
thanks to his work for conservation
organisations such as African Parks
and the Frankfurt Zoological Society.
His adventures have taken him to
some of the most remote areas on
the continent, giving him a chance
to distil Africa’s wild beauty through
the camera lens.
He has produced two beautiful
coffee table books along the way.
His first, South Africa’s Wildest Places,
was released in 2016 (see Issue 3),
and his second, Spirit of Africa,
was published in late 2024.
From the rainforests of the Congo
and the dunes of the Namib to the
grassy plains of the Maasai Mara,
Scott’s powerful visual storytelling
takes readers through 150 large-scale
images of the landscapes, wildlife
and indigenous tribes of Africa’s
most iconic national parks and
wilderness areas, highlighting
humanity’s impact on the
continent’s endangered species.
“With these photographs, I hope
readers will realise that although we
need to expand and conserve wild
areas for our physical survival and
mental wellbeing, these animals have
a right to exist on their own terms
too,” he says. “The wild places of Africa
represent the idea that humans do
not have exclusive rights to Earth.”
Spirit of Africa, published by
Quivertree, is available in bookshops
or at scottramsay.africa for R1,200.
For each copy sold, R50 is donated
to the Endangered Wildlife Trust.
