Bishops alumni shone in 2024, with Olympic medals, rugby triumphs
and record-breaking performances across multiple sports.

here’s no more prestigious
sporting stage than the
Olympics, so we start by
honouring the four 2024
OD Olympians who represented
South Africa in Paris: Dayaan
(2017W) and Mustapha Cassiem
(2020W) and Ryan Julius (2013K)
in hockey; and Tristan Leyds
(2015S) in rugby sevens.
Despite having to fund their own
trip to France, the hockey players
acquitted themselves superbly

against the best in the world,
with a famous win over the hosts
and a hard-fought draw against
the fancied Team GB. Beyond the
Olympics, the Cassiem brothers
have had a banner year. Dayaan
is now captain of both the indoor
and outdoor hockey teams, and
he led South Africa to its first-ever
medal at a hockey World Cup at
the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup
in Pore , Croatia in February 2025.
Mustapha remains South Africa’s
most potent threat in both formats,
and his hat-trick in the 6-5 playoff
victory over Belgium secured the
bronze medal. He went on to be
named player of the tournament,
with a remarkable 17 goals.
Meanwhile, Tristan Leyds was
part of a struggling national sevens
team that defied expectations
in Paris, edging out Australia in
the third-place playoff to secure
a bronze medal for South Africa
