SPORT
has helped turn the tide for the
Blitzboks, and they went on to win
the Cape Town leg of the World
Rugby sevens circuit in December.
Speaking of sevens rugby, Nic
Searle (1980O), Canadian branch
secretary, got in touch to ensure
we were aware that Max Stewart,
nephew of Christian, had followed
in his uncle's career footsteps, and
is playing for Canada in the World
Rugby sevens series.
In the 15-man game, Bishops
secured its latest Springbok
cap when Sacha FeinbergMngomezulu (2020F) made his
national debut against Wales in
June. He then made headlines
with standout performances
against Ireland, Australia and
New Zealand in a season that
saw the Springboks end the
year as the top-ranked team
in the world. It has, however,
been something of a roller coaster
year for Sacha, as injuries have
subsequently kept him out of
the game for extended periods.
Up north, Sacha’s Founders
contemporary Ross Vintcent
(2020F) has had a similar
international breakout year
for an Italian side that has had
its greatest run of results in the
Six Nations Championship since
they joined the competition in
2000, with a draw against France
and wins over Scotland and Wales
(twice). Surely it’s no coincidence
that it’s all happened since the
Bishops import arrived…
Elsewhere on the rugby field,
Adam de Waal (2022F), Bruce
Sherwood (2022F) and Haashim
Pead (2023O) all represented
South Africa in the U20 Rugby
Championship in Australia
in April/May 2024. Bruce and
Haashim then played in the
junior World Cup in July, though
Adam missed out due to injury.
This year, Haashim has been
selected for the U20 tour of
Georgia along with Gilermo
Mentoe (2023S); both are also in
the Lions setup. Their classmate
Nicholas Allison (2023B) made
his U20 debut in English colours
against Ireland in January.
Also in January, Jonny Roche
(2021M) earned his first start for
the Stormers, against Sale Sharks.
He is yet another OD who has
broken into the Stormers setup,
joining Sacha, Adam, Bruce
Suleiman Hartzenberg (2021S),
Connor Evans (2020W), Imad
Khan (2021S) and Aidan Norris
(2023M) (see p16). Meanwhile,
John Dobson (1985K) remains
head coach, assisted by his head
of player affairs (and school mate)
Duncan Cruickshank (1985G).
In France, Dillyn Leyds (2010S)
is still turning out for La Rochelle,
with well over 100 caps now, while
Oliver Kebble (2009S) has moved
to Oyonnax, having helped the
Glasgow Warriors win the 2024
URC in his eighth and final year
at the club. They faced the Bulls in
the final, with both Nizaam Carr
(2009M) and Cornel Smit (2015W)
on the losing bench. Nizaam,
now described as a “seasoned
campaigner” in reports, has
taken the captain’s armband
on numerous occasions for
the Bulls in the past year.
From left: brothers Dean (2022M), Ryan (2019M) and Brett Sneddon (2016M),
and more recent school water-polo star Jordan De Sousa (2024G), all took
part in the World Aquatics World Cup from 19 to 21 December 2024.
