THE ROUNDUP
Renowned composer Grant
McLachlan (1973F) has been busier
than usual; most recently, he gave
several lectures at the UCT Summer
School in January 2026, culminating
in a performance to round things off.
Having studied for an MA in Electroacoustic Music for Film and Television
at Bournemouth University, Grant
combines his love of music with
a deep appreciation for the natural
world. He has composed music for
more than 60 wildlife documentaries,
such as Mountain of the Sea, part
of the BBC “Natural World” series,
as well as many films for Londolozi
Productions, including the Discovery
Channel special Living with Tigers.
The late John Joubert (1944O),
whose obituary appeared in Issue 3,
has achieved a further accolade
among many, this time posthumously.
Londinium, one of London’s leading
choirs, is scheduled to record an
So Classic
album of his previously unrecorded
choral works – a fitting tribute to his
talent and his prodigious output. The
release, under the SOMM Recordings
label, is planned for 2027 to mark the
centenary of John’s birth.
Paul du Toit (1992W), a veteran
of both film and stage, is continuing
to manage his cross-Atlantic showbiz
career since his move to Vancouver,
Canada, a few years back. He won
critical acclaim for his role in
a production last May of David
Mamet’s Oleanna at The Nest
on Granville Island in Vancouver
(see photo). He also appeared in
The Last Frontier: Alaska, an Apple
TV series starring Jason Clarke.
Paul is not the only creative plying
his trade in British Columbia. Last

a prestigious role at the third-largest
orchestra in Canada, which entails
managing its music library, and
preparing and distributing music.
Neil studied music at Bishops and
then UCT, where he shone in flute
and organ studies. He was a flautist
with the Cape Town Philharmonic
Orchestra, taught the flute at Bishops,
and played the organ there, before
deciding, as a young man, to go west.
