HISTORY
100 YEARS
OF SERVICE
This year marks the centennial celebration of the
War Memorial Chapel, which has stood at the physical
and spiritual heart of Bishops since October 1926.
Built to honour 112 ODs lost in the Great War, its design
drew on churches centuries old, and was shaped by
Canon Birt’s vision and echoes of Wellington College.
Geoff de Wet traces its architectural history
The Diocesan College War Memorial Chapel
a century after its completion, still looking like
“a masterpiece”, as described by Sir Herbert Baker.
