ODU NEWS

There has also been fresh energy
around the ODU Committee, with
three new members joining the
ranks: Chris Bates (2003W), Pete
Husemeyer (2005S) and
Roger Warr (2000GW). They
have already begun to contribute
to our work in areas including
The Mitre Community, mentorship,
OD bursaries and communications.
Behind the scenes, the entire ODU
Committee continues to work
hard to keep the Union and the
Cape Town branch active, relevant
and financially responsible.
Finally, Issue 12 of The Old
Diocesan magazine was published
in March, once again celebrating
the breadth and richness of the
Bishops community. With the
Memorial Chapel marking its
centenary this year, Geoff de Wet
contributed a fascinating feature
on its history and architecture.
My thanks go to editor Tim
Richman, advertising manager
Paula Caradoc-Davies, and
publishers Lawrence Rose and
Alan Ramsay for their expertise
and commitment. Gisela Zunckel
has also done a superb job of
expanding the distribution
of the magazine to ODs.
Looking back over these six
months, the common thread
is connection. The OD Union is
at its best when it brings people
together – to celebrate, to remember,
to support one another and to
remain connected to Bishops.

The annual OD dinner, held in the ballroom at Kelvin Grove in June, included
a record number of younger ODs and an expo around the perimeter featuring
wine from some of our finest OD winemakers. Turn the page for more.
The challenge for us is to make
sure that the Union continues
to have meaning at every stage
of an OD’s life: helping young
ODs find their first job, providing
connections when working or
travelling overseas, supporting
ODs and their families, and –
perhaps most importantly – giving
an older OD the opportunity to sit
down with an old friend and pick
up a conversation as if no time
had passed.
That, ultimately, is the value of
the OD network. It is a community
that lasts a lifetime.
