All but two of the photographs in this
pictorial were taken by Brandon de Kock
(1986K), who spent a week in Nepal in
June, trekking beneath Mardi Himal.
For more on his trip, and the lessons
he returned home with, see page 38.
RIGHT The Himalayas aren’t all rocky
ridges and snow. Lush, mossy forests
are a feature of the Mardi Himal trail
all the way up to the 3,000m mark.
OPPOSITE TOP By the time you hit the
snowline at 4,000m, the scenery has
changed. Forest gives way to schist and
scree, and the barren ridges with their
weather-battered structures take
on a distinctly otherworldly appearance.
BELOW Clear air in the mornings
offers a world of constant contrast –
in this case, a high-altitude teahouse
nestled in lush rhododendron forests,
with the towering peak of Annapurna
South standing watch.
