ART
O
ver the course of my
36 years as Master of
Art at Bishops, I was
privileged to teach a
multitude of talented
boys. In some cases, those Bishops
boys became ODs who pursued
their art professionally, and
in recent years I’ve enjoyed
collaborating with two of them
in particular – Tom Cartwright
(1988K) and Michael Beckurts
(2018M). In March this year, the
three of us held an exhibition at
The Mitre, specifically from the
downstairs foyer leading into
the Bishops 175 Exhibition Centre.
Titled “Significance of Place”,
the work on display reflected
the unique ways that the

individual artists, “view the
concept of place as a unifying
presence in their works”.
That description came from
former Bishops deputy principal
Michael King, who obligingly
delivered the opening speech on
6 March. This was Founder’s Day,
a deliberate choice, as it is hoped
that it will be the first of an annual
Founder’s Week art exhibition.
With wine generously supplied by
Bruce Jack (1987G), it was a wellattended and enjoyed occasion.
Many ODs, staff and friends
of Bishops will know Michael as
an accomplished educator and
author. In his thought-provoking
talk, he addressed important
topics related to art and meaning.
