Earlier this year, the school announced the commissioning of a life-sized
statue of Archbishop Desmond Tutu to commemorate the centenary of the
Memorial Chapel. As the Archbishop of Cape Town, Desmond Tutu was for
many years also The Visitor to the College, much loved by the many boys
who heard his sermons. His statue, by renowned sculptor André Prinsloo,
will be positioned behind the existing bronze statue of the boy seated on
the lawns, at the approximate intersection of the sightlines between the
altars of the Memorial and Brooke chapels. The unveiling is scheduled
for Friday, 30 October 2026 – the eve of the centennial anniversary.
