LONG-TERM
COMMITMENT
VUSA’s current HQ is
a rented former school
that has seen better days.
Soon it will be owned, and
the renovations can begin.
A neglected school building in Langa is set to become
VUSA’s permanent home – a landmark moment for the
Rugby & Learning Academy. CEO Nikki Matthews explains
how long-term thinking, including a partnership with Investec,
is helping to drive lasting change for the children VUSA serves
T
here is a neglected former
school building in Langa
with a leaking roof, broken
windows and classrooms that
have definitely seen better days.
It’s certainly not beautiful – but
for those of us who can see its
potential, it could be.
Look beyond what it is today,
and you might see a library filled
with kids, a computer lab opening
them up to the digital world, and
classrooms where they can learn,
create, eat healthy meals and
imagine a bigger future.
84 | THE OLD DIOCESAN
Thanks to a significant
contribution from an anonymous
donor as well as the ongoing
support of Bishops, VUSA is
taking an important step towards
securing this building as its
permanent home. If all goes
to plan, VUSA will hold a halfshare in a space from which its
programmes can serve Langa
for many years.
Plenty still needs to be done.
Roofs must be repaired, windows
must be replaced and classrooms
have to be transformed. When the
work is done, we’ll have a place we
can call home, one that holds the
same ambition for every child who
walks through our doors: a bright
future filled with excellence.
PARTNERING FOR SUCCESS
BEYOND THE SCHOOL GATES
VUSA grew from a belief within
the Bishops community that
the knowledge, standards and
opportunities available at the
school should have an impact
beyond its gates.
